Club History

The Rowville Football Club was founded in October 1964 after a meeting held at the Captains Cabin, Stamford Hotel. On March 27, 1965, Mr. Mark Walker presented the clubs colours at a 'Barbecue and Dance' function held at the Sunray Club (adjacent to Heany Park). Mr. Mark Walker donated 20 guernseys and socks, in the design of the VFL team of whose recruiting zone included Rowville. Our first game was against Mt Evelyn and was held on April 24, 1965. Playing in the 3rd Division of the E.D.F.L., the club fielded only one team in 1965, with Laurie Appleton appointed Coach and Captain. With the team finishing 6th on the ladder, Laurie also won the League Best and Fairest award that year.

The club played in its first finals game against Mooroolbark in 1967. Played at Lilydale, Rowville lost in a close match.

In the 1st quarter of the Seniors game against Mooroolbark on May 9, 1970, a 2 foot copperhead snake was killed by a spectator on the oval.

1971 was a big year for Reserves by winning the clubs first Premiership Flag.

In 1972, the club commenced the process of building the present pavilion at Seebeck Oval. After much volunteer labour and council help, the pavilion was officially opened on May 5, 1977. The Seniors won back to back Premiership Flags in 1980 and 1981. The Reserves also won their second Premiership Flag in 1981 making it the most successful year for the club on the field. Len Hall was the Seniors coach at the time with Peter Burns coaching the Reserves.

1987 saw the move by the junior section of the club to Eildon Parade. Since this move, the junior club has steadily grown into one of the largest junior clubs in Melbourne.

The club became a limited license club in 1991 and gained a full license in 1993. A move towards obtaining poker machines was not supported.

The Reserves repeated the efforts of the Senior side from 11 years before by winning back to back Premiership Flags in 1991 and 1992. In 1994 the Rowville Football Club sold half its assets to the Rowville Cricket Club, and the Sporting Club, as we know it, began its life.

The U/18's (Colts) ensured the club continued to taste success as they won their 1st Premiership in 1995 while the Seniors were regrouping after struggling for a few years.

The senior team played off against Mt. Evelyn in 1998 for the Premiership, unfortunately losing in what was an appalling day weather wise. The year 2000 was another successful one for the Reserves winning another Premiership Flag. The seniors featured in the finals series but while they did not win the Premiership, they were the only team all year to defeat the eventual Premiers Waverley Blues.

2001 saw the construction of the Hill grandstand where our supporters can now enjoy the atmosphere of the hill, without being subjected to the weather. The best result for the year came from the clubs affiliation with the Mossgiel Park U/17s. They managed to go through the season undefeated and rightfully deserved to hold the Premiership cup aloft at the end of the season. The same side went on to win the Colts flag playing for Rowville in 2002, giving the Rowville FC it's second U/18's premiership.

2002 and 2003 saw the Seniors win flags under Paul "Monsta" Mynott as Senior Coach in Divisions 3 and 4. Rowville is the only club in the EFL to have achieved this feat twice.
The club became affiliated with the Hawthorn Football Club on February 9, 2003.

In recent years the Club has continued to grow with the club regularly making finals, culminating in another Colts flag in 2009 and a Reserves flag in 2011.
